GSBA TUITION SCHOLARSHIP

The GARDEN STATE BAR ASSOCIATION (GSBA) cordially invites you to apply to be one of our 2017-2018 Scholarship Recipients. The Scholarship will be awarded on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at our 43rd Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala.

The GSBA was created to support African-American and other attorneys of color to gain and maintain permanence in the legal profession in the State of New Jersey. In an effort to give back to the community, twenty-five (25) years ago, the GSBA created a Scholarship Fund to help African-American law students attending schools in New Jersey. Traditionally, one student from each of New Jersey’s law schools was chosen to receive a scholarship. However, the GSBA has expanded the scholarship program to permit New Jersey residents attending law schools outside of New Jersey to apply.

In order to apply for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in a New Jersey law school or a New Jersey resident enrolled in an accredited law school in another state;
  • A full-time first or second year student, or a part-time first, second or third-year student;
  • In good academic standing (an official certificate of good standing must accompany the application);
  • Demonstration of financial need;
  • Significant involvement in law school and community activities, which benefit the African-American community;
  • Submission of a Scholarship Application;
  • Submission of a current resume;
  • Submission of an official Certificate of Good Standing;
  • Submission of current transcript; and
  • Submission of Biography (no more than a single page)

Email deadline of March 16, 2018 (applications received after this date will not be considered).
Tentatively, interviews will be scheduled for the week of April 9, 2018.

In addition to the above, all applications will be judged based upon their content, clarity, ability to follow directions and professionalism. It is our intent to award at least three scholarships. However, failure to abide by the above criteria may result in less than three scholarships being awarded.

Qualified law students who are interested in applying should forward the above in one email at the same time to: DEMETRICE R. MILES, ESQ. at DMILES@MSBNJ.COM

GSBA SUMMER ASSOCIATE diversity SCHOLARSHIP

The Garden State Bar Association (GSBA) and Archer & Greiner have announced a new scholarship program with support from Panasonic Corporation of North America. The Archer GSBA Diversity Scholarship (Scholarship) was established to identify, support and train exceptionally qualified diverse law students who demonstrate the characteristics needed to become future leaders in the legal profession. Designed for rising second-year law students, the Scholarship will provide the recipient with financial support, ongoing mentoring, and hands-on experience during the summer of 2018 working at a law firm and a corporate legal department.

Candidates should demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, exceptional leadership qualities, and have a demonstrated connection to, and/or intent to practice law in, the tri-state area. The recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship along with a paid 9-week summer position in 2018, fulfilled through working a 5-week internship with Archer & Greiner, followed immediately by an additional 4-week internship with the in-house legal department of Newark, NJ-based Panasonic Corporation of North America, a leading technology partner and integrator to businesses, government agencies and consumers, which has agreed to be the in-house collaborator for the Scholarship’s inaugural year.

Ongoing mentorship is a critical element of the program. The Selection Committee’s goal will be not only to help students financially, but also to take an active and ongoing role in identifying and furthering the professional development of future leaders in the legal profession. The Scholarship recipient will receive ongoing mentoring and support from members of the Selection Committee during, and after, his or her internship.

In announcing the scholarship, Lloyd Freeman, Partner, Archer & Greiner, and member of the firm’s Diversity Committee said, “Archer & Greiner is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in our firm, and it is with great pleasure that we are able to extend that commitment to include this collaboration with the GSBA and Panasonic.”

Joining the announcement, Damien Atkins, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Panasonic Corporation of North America said, “Panasonic is pleased to join GSBA in this important initiative to identify and foster the professional growth of exceptional minority law school students.  The opportunity provides another important avenue for Panasonic to continue to deliver on our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”

Freeman, also the President of the GSBA added, “This scholarship will work to attract outstanding African-Americans and other ethnic minority law students to the legal profession in our region, and that is an objective the organization completely supports.”

Applications for the Scholarship are accepted by email only to LLOYD FREEMAN, ESQ. AT LFREEMAN@ARCHERLAW.COM.  The deadline to apply is February 23, 2018. Applicants will be required to submit their resume, official copies of their undergraduate and law school transcripts, as well as an essay.
