GSBA Director - Sharon K. McGahee, Esq.

Sharon K. McGahee is a native of NJ born in Newark, New Jersey and reared in Linden, NJ. Ms. McGahee attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She received a BA in Political Science and graduated cum laude in 1979.

Upon graduation from Spelman, Sharon enrolled at Rutgers University School of Law in Newark. She graduated in 1982 and after a short stint in private practice, moved to The United States Virgin Islands to work in The Office of The Attorney General. Returning to the states, she joined The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office as an Assistant Prosecutor. Thereafter, she returned to private practice working with the prestigious Black law firm, Ashley and Charles in Newark, NJ and next with Farabaugh Frieland Giles and Hillmann, House Counsel for Travelers Insurance Co. In 1994, Ms. McGahee joined The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the Office of The New Jersey Solicitor where she represents the agency in employment and personal injury negligence matters. She was promoted to Assistant Chief New Jersey Solicitor in 2004.

Over the course of her legal career, Ms. McGahee has tried approximately 55 cases to verdict. She has been involved in six published opinions regarding complex issues of constitutional and federal law.

Ms. McGahee is an active member of the New Jersey State, Garden State, Essex County and American Bar Associations and The Association of Black Women Lawyers. She serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of Essex-Newark Legal Services. Moreover, Sharon is also a former member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee and District Fee Arbitration Committee. She was recently appointed to serve as a Trustee for Ramapo College of New Jersey. Sharon is also a member of The Montclair Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. She has served as Chair of the Garden State Bar Association's Scholarship Committee for 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008 and served on the Garden State Bar Association's Nominating Committee for 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Ms. McGahee has been an active member of The Northern New Jersey Alumnae Chapter of NAASC since 1991. She is a former President, Treasurer and Scholarship Chair and currently holds the position of Jazz Ensemble Benefit Chairperson.

She is single and lives in Maplewood, NJ.
