President's Report - January 15, 2009

December 1, 2008 B GSBA President attended the 7th Annual Reception Honoring Minority Judges. GSBA co-sponsored the event with a financial contribution of $250.

December 3, 2008 B GSBA co-sponsored the Dress to Impress Program hosted by the Essex County Bar Association. The Program was an interactive program in which Sharon Kornstein, President and Founder of Image Design, LLC., imparted life lessons to attendees on dressing for success while raising awareness and much needed financial support for Dress for Success - Newark. The Dress for Success Charity promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help women thrive.

December 8, 2008 B On the recommendation of the Judicial and Prosecutorial Affairs Committee Chair, the GSBA Executive Committee voted in favor of supporting Mark Anderson, Esq., who was nominated by Governor Corzine to serve as New Jersey's first Medicaid Inspector General. GSBA submitted a letter of support to the Senate Judiciary Committee and GSBA President attended the confirmation hearing held on December 8, 2008. Mr. Anderson was subsequently confirmed as the Medicaid Inspector General.

January 7, 2009 B On the recommendation of the Judicial and Prosecutorial Affairs Committee Chair, the GSBA Board of Directors voted in favor of supporting three of our members, namely, Vaughn McKoy, Paula Dow and Mark Anderson, for appointment to the position of United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey. ABWL joined GSBA in endorsing these candidates. Letters were sent to US Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez urging the Senators to give these candidates serious consideration during the selection process. All three candidates are preeminently qualified to hold the position of United States Attorney having demonstrated outstanding legal abilities, exceptional leadership skills and integrity beyond reproach, all prerequisites for the position. A press release was also sent to media outlets to this effect.

January 13, 2009 - GSBA President submitted a Court Night 2009 Program Plan to the New Jersey State Bar Association requesting $1,400 in funding to partner with ABWL in conducting a Law Day program that will include attorneys visiting schools and speaking to students throughout the State about the legal system.
