GARDEN STATE BAR ASSOCIATION MEDIA RELEASEGarden State Bar Association Condemns New York Post CartoonNEWARK, NEW JERSEY - The Garden State Bar Association (GSBA), representing African-American attorneys committed to eliminating discrimination and inequality based on race, gender, ethnicity or other considerations, condemns the distasteful New York Post cartoon depicting a dead chimpanzee to which the Post draws an analogy to the author of the stimulus bill, President Barack Obama. GSBA views this cartoon as a veiled but clear reference to the President of the United States. The explanation provided by the New York Post for the inflammatory cartoon was inadequate, unacceptable and insulting at best and ugly, alarming and dangerous at its worst. The New York Post's publication of the cartoon which uses a monkey to depict the 44th President of the United States is a cruel mockery of America's struggles with race and a stark reminder of the disparate treatment of Black Americans in the recent past. The failure of the New York Post to recognize the offensiveness of this cartoon is unconscionable and damaging for people of all races. This cartoon not only evokes a history of racist symbolism, but it promotes hatred and ignorance which threaten to dampen the racial progress and unity which has taken shape across this country with the recent election of President Obama. Since a non-racist political press is fundamental to our democratic process, the Garden State Bar Association joins other individuals and organizations in condemning the New York Post for publishing this racially biased cartoon. The Garden State Bar Association urges every American to refuse to patronize any organization that promotes disrespect, hatred and disharmony towards others. GSBA urges every American to boycott the New York Post and its advertisers until a proper apology is issued and the individuals responsible for this infamous cartoon are held accountable for their intolerable actions.
