Every ten years, after the Federal census is conducted, a fierce fight commences between New Jersey's two political parties with respect to how the legislative map of the State is drawn. This year, the GSBA did not stand idle on the sidelines. The GSBA conducted community forums, as well as workshops for its own members, to educate and motivate citizens of New Jersey to play an active role in influencing the panel overseeing the process. In casting his tie-breaking vote, Professor Alan Rosenthal, said of the wining map:
“The Democratic map, I believe, was more conservative and a less-disruptive map...It’s a map that gives the minority party a chance to win the majority in the Legislature, even in what is essentially a Democratic state.”
The new map will be used during the November elections, in which all 120 members of the Legislature are up for election. Democrats currently control the Assembly 47-33, and the Senate 23-17.
